RICHARD
MITCHELL MICHIGAN NOTES & QUOTES
RACING AT MICHIGAN:
"The Michigan track is a fun place to race..... it's big, wide,
fast, and has
several grooves. There's a lot of room to pass, which makes it
one of the
most competitive tracks we race at during the year. We have
raced well at
Michigan in the past; we feel we can be competitive in the BUSCH
race."
KEY TO SUCCESS AT MICHIGAN:
"Without question, the key to success at Michigan is track
position. There
normally aren't many caution flags there, and it's difficult to
gain
positions during long green flag runs, even if you're running
faster than the
leaders. At Michigan it is important to qualify well, and be
able to beat
the competition in the pits. Pit stops are critical at
Michigan. A mistake
in the pits will kill you, because it is so difficult to make-up
ground on
the track."
COMPETING IN THE BUSCH SERIES:
"It's a tough deal, particularly when you don't have the same
resources as
the top teams. We are a top-five car on the ARCA RE/MAX
circuit, but on the
BUSCH side we are struggling to crack the top-30. There are 25
good race
teams in the BUSCH Series. Other than Winston Cup, this is the
most
competitive series in the world. I feel we can run in the
top-25, but we
can't afford to make mistakes. We don't have a testing program,
we don't
have a legitimate race shop, we don't have any full-time
personnel, and we
don't have any ties to a Winston Cup team for technology. We
aren't in the
loop, so we are forced to learn by trial and error. Not the
best case
scenario, but that is the only avenue open to us at the present
time."
* In three previous ARCA RE/MAX Michigan races Mitchell
has two
top-five runs and a 13th place finish on his resume. The West
Virginia
University graduate finished third in the Michigan ARCA race
this past June.
In three other 2002 ARCA starts, Mitchell was seventh at
Daytona, fifth at
Lowe's Motor Speedway, and 27th at Pocono Raceway, after
crashing while
leading the race.
* Mitchell has attempted three NASCAR BUSCH Series events
in 2002,
finishing 35th and 34th in the two Nashville Superspeedway
contests. At the
June Music City race Mitchell recorded the 25th quickest
qualifying time.
The two-time NASCAR Northeast region Weekly Racing Series
champion failed to
make the field at Chicagoland Speedway after qualifying 38th
fastest.
* The Coach USA team has entered a Hutcherson-Pagen built
Chevrolet
Monte Carlo in the Michigan race. The car was purchased from
Eddie Sharp as
a 'roller' over the winter and has subsequently been upgraded.
* Mitchell has been nominated to become the spokesperson
for the West
Virginia University Prevention Research Center's new "Race to
Health"
campaign, which is designed to promote a healthy life style for
citizens of
the state. Mitchell will make special appearances in schools
and malls, and
attend community events and festivals to spread the word about
safety,
promote physical activity and encourage healthy eating habits.
* The Michigan Cabela's 250 will be televised live on the
TNT network
beginning at 1:30 PM (ET). The race also will be broadcast on
the MRN radio
network.
