“We
had a good year in 1998,” Catalano said. “That made us want to
run the feature division for a regional championship.
“It’s been a goal since we raced Late Model cars in the mid to
late 80’s. I tried real hard to win [the region] but we always
ran into a problem one way or the other. This was the first year
I really felt comfortable in the car. My crew gives me a good
car every week and it’s paying off,” Catalano said.
Due
to several early-season rainouts, Catalano’s initial hopes for
the regional championship were slim. In the NASCAR Weekly Racing
Series presented by Dodge, a driver must compete in a minimum of
18 events in order to be eligible for the regional title.
Spencer Speedway added a few twin 20-lap feature events near the
end of the season, which ironically, was something Catalano was
originally opposed to.
“A
couple of years ago they wanted to run twin 20’s and I was the
guy who didn’t want to run them. This year I didn’t ask for
them, but, thank goodness the track did,” Catalano said. “I
can’t wait to see the big check and hopefully next year take a
shot at the national championship.”
