SHANE HUFFMAN WINS USAR HOOTERS PROCUP
“CHARLIE CAMPBELL MEMORIAL 250”
NEIL BROWN CAPTURES 2001 JENNERSTOWN FINALE RACE

by Mike Milliron

Jennerstown, PA – September 29, 2001 – Shane Huffman proved that previous track experience is not always necessary, as he took his first visit to Jennerstown Speedway all the way to victory lane in the USAR Hooters ProCup presentation of the “Charlie Campbell Memorial/Hooters 250” Saturday night at the Laurel Highlands Oval. Huffman began his initial visit by blasting to the pole position for the 250 lap feature event, then went on to dominate the race by leading the most laps, en route to the win. The race was the first of four champions championship events leading up to the crowning of the 2001 Hooters ProCup Series Championship. Derrick Kelly used early pit strategy to move from his 34th starting position, and wound up with the race lead after a mid-race caution period. Huffman restarted the race in fourth place, and quickly worked back to the front of the pack. Brian Vickers, Jeff Agnew, and Jay Fogleman rounded out the top five.

Neil Brown capped off his 2001 NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Late Model division championship by winning the final race of the season, run in conjunction with the USAR Hooters ProCup Series event at the Laurel Highlands Oval. Brown started from the sixth position, due to an eight-car field inversion, but wasted little time making his way to the front of the pack. Early race leader Mark Cottone who had won the previous two feature events, seemed to have another race win in hand, but lost the handle on his race car as Brown’s machine continued to gain ground.

Once in the race lead, Brown seemed to be running on a rail, as the race quickly developed into a battle for the runner-up position. The two cars in contention were Cottone and Mark Smith, who had won the “Fast Time” pole position award earlier in the evening. The drivers used the high and low racing grooves to wage a side-by-side battle that allowed other cars to close on the duo and begin to force the issue. As the laps wound down, it was Mark Smith who won the battle with Mark Cottone, and finished the race in a distant second to Brown. Cottone held onto third, while Bobby Henry and Barry Awtey completed the top five to drop the curtain on the 2001 NASCAR Weekly Racing Season at Jennerstown Speedway.

Next Sunday will be the “Racer’s Swap Meet”, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Everything involved with racing, from complete racecars, to parts and pieces will be available for purchase or trade. Come on out and find a bargain!
