MARK SMITH WINS BIG MONEY
FOR RACE FAN
AT JENNERSTOWN SPEEDWAY
by Mike Milliron
|
Jennerstown, PA – May 26, 2001 – Mark Smith took home the
Late Model feature win, and all of the big money Saturday
night during Spring Championships presented by Pepsi at the
Jennerstown Speedway. Other feature race winners during the
spring championships were Josh Coughenour in Pro Truck,
Tracy Colarusso in Brown Timber and Land Street Stock, Jayme
Bolkovac the Cover Insurance Agency/PA Legacy Car, Jason
Holder in Chargers, and Terry McCoy won the Mens Enduro
race.
Not only did the Meyersdale,
PA native lock up the $1000 dollar "Fast Time Award", for
qualifying his Hunter’s Peterbuilt Sales/R&M Trucking Ford
Taurus first among twenty-two other Wheeler Bros./AC Delco
Late Model competitors. He then started the seventy-five-lap
feature race from the pole position, but lost the front spot
to Neil Brown on the first lap. Smith stayed glues to
Brown’s rear bumper throughout the first fifty laps of the
race. Then on lap fifty-two Smith made the move inside of
Brown to regain the lead, which he extended to a small
margin over the final laps to the checkered flag, and the
win. Brown maintained a tight battle and finished a close
second, while Barry Awtey came home in third. Ryan Hemphill
had a fine fourth place finish in his first appearance of
the 2001- racing season, with Brad Creighton coming back
from a spin during qualifying, to finish in fifth. Smith
picked up an additional $1000 dollars for the feature win,
which also made his "Spectator 500" partner, George
Lensbouer of Friedens, PA. $500 dollars richer. The next
"Spectator 500" will be held on July fourth, when the
Speedway presents their next seventy-five lap Late Model
division race.
The Jennerstown Pro Trucks
were a wild and woolly bunch, as most of the top drivers
were involved in some type of accident. The man on the move
once again throughout the entire event was the eventual race
winner Josh Coughenour. During the middle of the race it was
divisional rookie Jason Lasky, who had worked his way into
second and was making his move for the lead over George
Englert, when he lost the handle on his Pick-up and looped
it in front of the rest of the field. He was collected by
last week’s winner George Nicola in a tough looking
accident, but each driver was able to walk away. That opened
the door for Dave Brunell and Aaron Will to make an attempt
on Coughenour, but in the end the drivers had to settle for
second and third respectively. Fourth place went to Barry
Geary with George Englert getting collected in a two truck,
final turn spin with Bryan Thomas, but limping across the
line to finish in the top five. George Englert set the fast
time during Pro Truck qualifying.
The Brown Timber and Land
Street Stock feature race was another great two-car finish
between Adam Kostelnik and Tracy "Dink" Colarusso. The race
was a barnburner from the start as Todd Knight and Kostelnik
had the front row through the early laps. Then the duel
erupted between Colarusso and Kostelnik, with the lead
changing hands for the final time when Colarusso made his
pass for the lead and the win. Kostelnik held on to a close
second place finish, while Chris Deyarmin, Billy Mostoller,
and Todd Knight finished under a blanket to complete the top
five. Mark Blohm and Matt Berkibile won the heat races.
The Cover Insurance
Agency/PA Legacy Car feature race was as exciting as they
come, as Jayme Bolkovac had to rally from an early race
accident to work her way back through the field to capture
yet another win. After her accident, Bolkovac had to have
the hood of her racecar removed, but that did not deter her
from the chance of winning. She patiently worked her way
through the front runners to reclaim the top spot and go on
for the win. Will Thomas ran a great race and maintained a
solid hold on second over Brandon Taylor to the finish line.
Finishing behind Taylor in fourth Joey Dennowitz, with Bill
Miller rounding out the top five.
The Jennerstown Charger race
was a done deal after the first few laps as Jason Holder
celebrated a feature win just one week after celebrating his
birthday. His closest competition was a contest between June
Wyant and Jason Fritz, who had their own two-car battle
brewing over the final few laps, with Wyant coming out in
second and Fritz in third. Last weeks feature winner Greg
Praysner rebounded from engine woes and a back of the pack
start, to finish in fourth pace. Jeff Petrini drifted from a
pole position start, to finish in fifth.
Terry McCoy captured the
Mens Enduro race to finish off the night’s action.
