SHAWN "THE BULLET" BEAM WINS AT JENNERSTOWN
by Mike Milliron

Jennerstown, PA – May 19, 2001 –
It only took two weeks for Shawn "The Bullet" Beam to go from wreckers-to-checkers, as he made a triumphant return to victory lane in the Wheeler Bros./AC Delco Late Model feature race Saturday night at Jennerstown Speedway. Other feature winners during True Value/Penns Woods Council Scouts race night were Adam Kostelnik in Brown Timber and Land Street Stock, George Nicola in Jennerstown Pro Truck, Jayme Bolkovac in Cover Insurance Agency/PA Legacy Car. Greg Praysner won in Jennerstown Charger, Matt Wallace in Mini Cup, and Tiffany Shaffer in the Ladies Enduro.

It was only two weeks ago, after a serious turn one crash that Shawn Beam had to have his Precision Millwork and Cabinetry Ford Taurus taken from the Speedway on a flatbed tow truck. After major repair work by Port City Chassis and the entire crew, the car seemed to be right back in very competitive form, as Beam was able to pass on both the high and low grooves to work his way into the lead.

It was Brad Creighton who took the outside line of competitors to the front of the pack early on, bringing Beam along in second. The pair ran off from a third place, side-by-side battle between Jeff Dunmyer and Mark Smith. Beam made his move around Creighton for the lead on lap eight, but once the Warminster, PA native lost the top spot, he stayed within striking distance with the race leader until the checkered flag waved. The battle for third through fifth was a toss-up between five different drivers, but at the finish line it was Barry Awtey in third, Mark Smith in fourth, and Neil Brown closing out the top five. Cary Todaro and Mark Smith won heat races.

The Brown Timber and Land Street Stock feature race saw a couple of rough wrecks early on, but in the end it was Adam Kostelnik running at the front to claim his third win of the season. The race was slowed for accidents involving John Stanko, Chris Deyarmin, Tracy Colarusso, and Todd Knight. Once the racing resumed, Kostelnik stretched his race lead over Roger Onstead, who had his own battle with Billy Mostoller. Colarusso and Knight worked back through the field to make their presence known. At the finish line behind Kostelnik, it was Colarusso bringing home second, Mostoller in third, Knight in fourth, and Onstead fading to fifth. Tracy Colarusso and Chris Deyarmin won the heat races.

It was a runaway win for "Jammin"George Nicola in the Jennerstown Pro Truck division feature race, as the Pittsburgh, PA native paced the remainder of the field throughout the entire event. The battle for second place on back was a tough fight between as many as five different truck drivers. Josh Coughenour found the inside line to his liking, and moved from fifth to second during the closing laps for a fine finish. The battle for third to fifth was not so easy, as Dave Brunell had to hold a hard charging Todd Price at bay for the third place spot. Finishing behind Price in fifth place was Brandon Manns. Josh Coughenour and Todd Price took the heat race wins.

Jayme Bolkovac proved that her Cover Insurance Agency/PA Legacy Car championship last season was no fluke, as she claimed her fourth feature win in five weeks of racing. The trip to the front of the pack took Bolkovac seven laps of mainly outside groove racing, with the exception of the lead pass over Bill Miller, which came on an inside move. The other big story of the night came from Joey Dennowitz, who showed that he had a car of equal measure to Bolkovac, as the two drivers displayed a fine example of close quarters driving. That is until the final lap, whenever Dennowitz lost the handle on his racer and spun in turn two. The ensuing restart allowed Miller the chance to challenge Bolkovac for the win, but that was not to be. Finishing behind Bolkovac and Miller at the finish line were Brandon Taylor, Ed Boyer, and Marshall Biddington.

Greg Praysner recorded his first ever career win in the Jennerstown Charger division feature, as he outdistanced his toughest competitor Jason Fritz at the finish line. Praysner had a close second place finish just one week ago, and this time around there was no denying the Level Green, PA native in his Advance Auto Pontiac Grand Prix. The wire-to-wire win was a special one, as Praysner had to fend off the challenges from two of the top drivers within the division, first Jason Holder and then Fritz at the end of the race. Finishing behind the top two at the checkers were June Wyant in third, Holder in fourth, and Joe Geary in fifth. Pete Walrath and Greg Praysner captured heat race wins.

Jennerstown Speedway hosted the first visit of the Super Mini Cup cars to Western Pennsylvania, and it was Matt Wallace capturing the feature win. The introduction of this touring division of downscaled racecars produced a total of five competitors, who ran twenty-five laps of green flag action in preparation for their touring event to be held in the coming weeks. Finishing behind Wallace in second through fifth were Ken Stabley Jr., Jacob Coffin, Davis Smith, and Mike Camp.

The second Ladies Enduro was a rousing success, with a total of ten cars on hand. The top result was the same as the first all women event though, as Tiffany Shaffer claimed her second win in as many starts. This win though came in an entirely different racecar than her inaugural victory. Finishing behind her in second was Connie Henry, third went to Angela Salyers, finishing in fourth place was Nikki Gross, and rounding out the top five was Denise Mulhorn.

Next week will mark the Spring Championships presented by Pepsi, featuring a seventy-five lap Wheeler Bros./AC Delco Late Model race. Former track champion Richard Mitchell is tentatively scheduled to make his first Jennerstown Speedway appearance of the 2001-racing season, along with an extended distance Pro Truck feature race, along with a Mens Enduro race.
