NEIL BROWN CAPTURES SECOND LATE
MODEL WIN AT JENNERSTOWN
|
by Mike Milliron
Jennerstown, PA – June 9, 2001 – Neil Brown used a front row
starting position to maximum advantage for a wire-to-wire win in
the Wheeler Bros./AC Delco Late Model feature race During Black
Specialty Service race night at Jennerstown Speedway. Other
feature race winners during the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series
program were Adam Kostelnik in the Brown Timber and Land Street
Stock, Jayme Bolkovac in the Cover Insurance Agency/PA Legacy
Car. Todd Price won in Jennerstown Pro Truck, Jason Holder in
Jennerstown Charger, and Scott Ahlborn in the Mens Enduro. In
the two rain delayed feature races from last weeks action, Jayme
Bolkovac won the PA Legacy Car feature, and Marion Reno Jr. took
the Jennerstown Pro Truck victory.
The start of the Wheeler Bros./AC Delco Late Model division
feature race was the most important time for eventual race
winner Neil Brown. The veteran pilot took the hole shot
advantage at the drop of the green flag over pole sitter Brad
Creighton, and although he was heavily pressured by the
Warminster, PA native throughout most of the race, never was
dislocated from the lead for the entire event. The challenges
continued through the remainder of the field, as Creighton and
Mark Smith challenged each other during the final laps, with
Smith taking the runner-up position and Creighton finishing in
third. Barry Awtey and Mark Cottone completed the top five. Neil
Brown and Mark Cottone won the heat races.
It was another front row start for eventually race winner Adam
Kostelnik that helped propel the North Braddock racer into the
top position in the Brown Timber and Land division feature race.
Once Kostelnik took the lead, the battle was to stay in front of
a hard charging Tracy “Dink” Colarusso, who quickly asserted
himself as the one to watch. Then the battle began between
Colarusso and Mike Bakalon, but the two drivers tangled on lap
twenty-two, forcing a slow down in the racing action. When the
event was resumed, Kostelnik had to fight back after Roger
Onstead took over the top spot in a great outside move. The pair
fought through the final laps, with Kostelnik coming out on top
in the end. Finishing behind Onstead with a fine run for third
was Mike Adams, while Bill Ashton and Craig Stoner rounded out
the top five.
The Jennerstown Charger division displayed yet another fine
example of two and three wide racing, with few wrecks to slow
down their performance. Greg Praysner held the early race lead,
until Jason Holder and Joe Geary decided to split the race
leader, which produced the first three-way battle of the event.
Then Jason Fritz and Jeff Petrini followed their lead, and Pete
Walrath and June Wyant completed the third side-by-side-by-side
struggle for positions, all within the length of two laps of
racing. As the front runners continued their skirmish, the lead
seemed comfortably in hand for Holder. That was, until Praysner
rebounded from his sandwiching experience, to mount a serious
charge for the lead. With three laps to go, Praysner moved into
the second position but had to settle for the runner-up
position. Last week’s feature winner Jason Fritz came home in
third, in front of Wyant and Geary.
A familiar face, Jayme Bolkovac, won both the Cover Insurance
Agency/PA Legacy Car feature races. In the make-up feature from
June 2, Bolkovac wasted little time in taking command of the
race, as she moved into the top spot around Todd Peck on lap
four. From then on the battle was for second on back, as Thomas
and Dennewitz challenged each other to the checkered flag, and
finishing second and third respectively. Taylor and Peck rounded
out the top five.
In the main feature event, Bolkovac paced herself behind early
race leader Joey Dennewitz, while battling side by side with
Will Thomas. Half way through the feature, Bolkovac made her
charge for the lead, which she never surrendered for the
remainder of the race. Dennewitz, captured second place after a
hard fought struggle with Thomas during the final laps. Todd
Peck and Brandon Taylor finished in fourth and fifth. Bolkovac
and Thomas won the heat races.
The Jennerstown Pro Truck division also ran two feature races,
with Marion Reno, Jr. and Todd Price taking the checkered flag
wins. In the make-up feature race, Reno used the inside line to
move from his third place starting position into the lead on lap
six over Josh Coughenour. Once in the lead Reno could see the
battle for second between Coughenour and Price throughout the
remaining laps, in route to his first pro truck division win at
Jennerstown Speedway. Price was able to get passed Coughenour to
finish in second place, with Aaron Will coming home in fourth
and George Englert in fifth.
In the main feature event, Brandon Manns appeared ready to
capture his first win of the season, as he lead a three truck
battle throughout most of the race. Then on lap twenty-one, a
late race caution brought the field together for a double file
restart. When the race restarted Manns was shuffled back to
third, as Price and Reno both got by for positions. At the
finish line it was Price taking the win, Reno in second with
Manns finishing a respectable, but disappointing third. Fourth
place went to pole-sitter Dave Brunell, with George Englert
finishing in fifth. Marion Reno, Jr. and Josh Coughenour won the
heat races.
Forty-five Mens Enduro cars took to the Laurel Highlands Oval in
another loud and rowdy fifty-lap escapade. When the dust settled
at the end of the event, veteran Enduro driver, Scott Ahlborn
was once again the king of the mountain. Finishing behind
Ahlborn in second through fifth place were Gregory Lohr, Jim
Bopziak, Bob Johnson, and Alan Steele.
Next weekend Jennerstown Speedway will present “Craftsman Night
at the Races” in conjunction with Snavely Forest Products
present the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series five division program,
along with the Super Mini Cup Series and Ladies Enduro.
