BARRY
AWTEY CLAIMS LATE MODEL WIN AT JENNERSTOWN
by Mike Milliron
Jennerstown, PA - June 2, 2001 - Barry Awtey claimed the Wheeler
Bros./AC Delco Late Model division feature race Saturday night
at Jennerstown Speedway with a wire-to-wire win during NASCAR
Weekly Racing Series action. Other feature winners on Hoosier
Mid-Atlantic Tire race night at the Laurel Highlands Oval were
Tracy "Dink" Colarusso in Brown Timber and Land Street Stock,
Jason Fritz in Jennerstown Charger, and Mother Nature in the
remaining race program.
It was a heavyweight title fight between the defending champ
Mother Nature, and the number one contender, Jennerstown
Speedway last Saturday night. The opening rounds went to
Jennerstown, but Mother Nature came back in the middle rounds
with a couple of haymakers. Jennerstown used it's youth and
experience to try and mount a comeback, but in the end it was
the champ who rained down with the knockout blow, which signaled
the end of night's racing activities during the Late model
victory lane celebrations.
The Wheeler Bros./AC Delco Late Models got off to a slow start,
as their feature race was delayed by a passing rain shower,
which forced the rescheduling of the night's racing action. Once
the other feature races had finished, the Late Model race was
brought out onto the track, with Awtey on the pole position.
After the earlier race rubber had been washed away, the normal
two groove racing surface took a while to come in. That allowed
the front pair of Awtey and Mark Smith to pull away from the
rest of the pack, before a couple of early cautions bunched the
field. On the ensuing restarts, Awtey cleared the field, forcing
a number of two-car battles to develop between Smith, Bobby
Henry, Jeff Dunmyer, and Mark Cottone. This allowed Awtey to
extend his race lead, as the battles continued among the
remaining top five competitors. At the finish line it was Awtey
running away with the race win, with Henry, Cottone, Smith, and
Dunmyer crossing the line in close order for second through
fifth place. Barry Awtey and Bobby Henry won the heat races.
In the Brown Timber and Land Street Stock feature race, it was
Tracy "Dink" Colarusso also claiming the green-to-checker flag
victory, marking his third trip to the winners' circle in the
2001-racing season. The win was once again primarily challenged
by eventual race runner-up Adam Kostelnik, who shadowed
Colarusso throughout the entire twenty-five lap event. The best
battle on the track was for the third through fifth positions,
as Gregory Kelly had a great run for most of the race in third,
before fading in the final laps to finish in fifth. Chris
Deyarmin claimed third, after hounding Kelly for much of the
first half of the event. Both he and Billy Mostoller got by
Kelly to finish in third and fourth respectively. Tracy "Dink"
Colarusso and Gregory Kelly won the heat races.
Jason Fritz showed the rest of the Jennerstown Charger division
what he was made of, as he got the chance to start up front on
the pole position, and never looked back en route to his feature
race win. His challenges came mainly from Joe Geary, who started
on the outside front row, and applied constant pressure on the
leader throughout the fifteen-lap race. Behind the front two it
was a plethora of three wide racing among the other contenders,
with Greg Praysner and Pete Walrath providing separate spins as
the track proved to narrow for the side-by-side-by-side action.
In the end, it was Travis Smith who finished in third, with
Jason Holder and Walrath completing the top five. Greg Praysner
and Travis Smith took the heat race wins.
With three of five feature races complete, the skies opened up
once again with rain, which forced the postponement of the
remaining two division feature races. The Cover Insurance
Agency/PA Legacy Car and Jennerstown Pro Truck features will be
made up during next Saturday night's racing program, when the
Jennerstown Speedway will present it's NASCAR Weekly Racing
Series program during Black's Specialty race night.
