Jennerstown, PA – July 28, 2001 –Mark Smith and Shawn Beam
shared the Wheeler Bros/AC Delco Late Model division spotlight
Saturday night, as Jennerstown Speedway played host to double
feature event racing during NASCAR Weekly Racing Series action
at the Laurel Highlands Oval. Other winners during the race
night presentation by The Mountain 96.5, D.C. Guelich, and
Allied Milk Producers were Todd Knight and Tracy Colarusso in
the Brown Timber and Land Street Stocks, Todd Price with both
wins in Jennerstown Pro Trucks. Rick Boyer won both Cover
Insurance Agency/PA Legacy Series feature races, and Jason
Fritz, along with Jason Holder took wins in the Jennerstown
Chargers. David Elswick won the special presentation Super
MiniCup Series event, while Chantal Germek took the win in the
Ladies Enduro race.
In the first Late Model feature race Mark Smith seemed to be
in a different area code, as he pulled away and left the rest of
the race field in his dust. The Myersdale pilot could do no
wrong as he sliced and diced his way through lapped traffic on
his way to another feature win. The best battles on the track
were for second through fifth, as Barry Awtey captured the
runner-up position in front of a persistant Travis Geisler and
Bobby Henry, who finished in third and fourth respectivly. Shawn
Beam made a last lap pass on Neil Brown to take home a fifth
place finish.
The second
Late Model race was a tough battle between Brad Creighton and
Shawn Beam, who stayed glued to each other, until Beam got by
for the lead on lap eighteen. From that point on it was all
Shawn Beam, who was driving his back-up racecar, after an
accident during last weeks race put his primary car out of
commission. Second through fifth place finishers were close
enough to throw a blanket over, as Creighton held onto second,
with Jeff Dunmyer, Travis Geisler, and Bobby Henry closed out
the top five.
It was a Todd
Price night in the Jennerstown Pro Truck division as the Alum
Bank, PA driver held off the rest of his competitors to take
both feature race wins. In the first race, it was a tight battle
for the second spot, which saw the truck of Aaron Will get
turned around on the final turn of the race, and actually record
a third place finish while scraping down the inside retaining
wall, backwards. Josh Coughenour took the second place honors,
with Dave Brunell and Marion Reno Jr. rounding out the top five.
The second Pro
Truck feature race was a little bit harder for Price, as the
starting field’s top ten drivers were inverted from the
finishing order of the first feature race. That put Price back
in the tenth position, and challenged the driver to work through
the front of the field. Price used his superior handling to his
advantage, and took over thte lead on lap twenty. The race was
not exactly over at that point though, as George Englert put up
a valiant fight, including leading the next to last lap, but in
the end it was Price who prevailed to capture the checkered
flag. Englert finished within a fender length for second place,
while Marion Reno Jr., Brandon Manns, and Josh Coughenour
completed the top five.
The Brown
Timber and Land Street Stock feature races were a contrast in
styles, as Todd Knight and Tracy Colarusso seemed poised to
dominate the entire night’s racing action. Knight pulled out to
the early lead over Colarusso in race one, with the two battling
throughout the twenty five-lap event. Colarusso took over the
top position on lap twenty and continued onto the checkered flag
for the race win. Adam Kostelnik made a last lap pass around
Knight to finish in second, with Knight in third. Carl
Trevarrow and Chris Deyarmin finished fourth and fifth.
The second
Brown Timber and Land Street Stock race saw Todd Knight learn
from his earlier mistake, as the Plum, PA driver led from lap
two until the checkered flag. Tracy Colarusso methodically
worked his way through the field to take home second place.
Third through fifth went to Jim Nicola, Adam Kostelnik and Chris
Deyarmin.
It was another
Jason and Jason show in the Jennerstown Charger division, as
Jason Fritz and Jason Holder each picked up feature wins. In
the first race it was Jason Fritz taking control on lap four
from Pete Walrath, and leading the rest of the way to the
checkered flag. The closest battle was for second between Greg
Praysner and Jason Holder, who battled to the final lap, where
Praysner took control and finished second with Holder right
behind in third. Walrath came home in fourth with Travis Smith
in fifth.
In the second
feature Pete Walrath started from the pole and pulled out to a
big lead in the first nine laps. Jason Holder continued to
close the gap until lap ten when he took the lead. Walrath hung
on for second place in front of Greg Praysner, Jason Fritz and
Travis Smith, who rounded out the top five.
The Cover
Insurance Agency/PA Legacy Series feature races turned into the
Rick Boyer show, as the Blairsville, PA driver took control of
both races en route to winning both events. The first race saw
Boyer staring in third position, and taking the lead on lap
eight from Will Thomas. A close battle ensued between Thomas
and Joey Dennewitz as the pair finished second and third behind
Boyer. Todd Peck and Ricky Anderson completed the top five.
The second
feature event for the Cover Insurance Agency/PA Legacy Series
saw Boyer once again starting in third position but this time it
only took him three laps to reach the lead position, which he
led onto for the remainder of the event. This time his closest
competition came from Jayme Bolkovac who shadowed him to the
finish line. Joey Dennewitz, Chris Brink and Art McEhlinney
finished third through fifth.
Chantal Germek
won her first Ladies Enduro race of the season by beating out
Connie Henry, Tiffany Bellavance, Tiffany Shaffer and Kimberly
Rhoads who finished second through fifth.
Two-time
National Super Mini Cup Champion David Elswick captured the
special event win at the Laurel Highlands Oval. Matt Wallace,
David Miller, David Smith and Ken Stabley completed the top
five.
Next week,
August 4th, Jennerstown Speedway will once again
welcome the Grand American Modifieds, as they make their second
appearance of the 2001 season. Regular racing in the Wheeler
Bros./AC Delco Late Models, Brown Timber and Land Street Stocks,
Cover Insurance Agency/PA Legacy Series, Pro Trucks, Chargers,
