JENNERSTOWN, Pa. (July 14, 2001)
– Jeff Agnew led only one lap in Saturday’s United Speed
Alliance Racing (USAR) Hooters ProCup Northern division race at
Jennerstown Speedway, but it was the final and most important
one.
With a bold move in turn 3 on the last lap, Agnew drew alongside
leader Brian Vickers and then won a side-by-side bumper-car
battle to the finish line to claim his second career Hooters
ProCup victory.
A red flag brought out by an accident by Chad Pendelton on lap
240 set up a three-lap shootout to the finish, and Agnew made
two moves for the lead before Vickers bobbled slightly in turn 3
that allowed Agnew to draw alongside. Agnew then beat Vickers’
Chevrolet to the finish line by a bumper.
Agnew led only the final lap in his NGA/Hooters Golf Tour
Chevrolet Monte Carlo, but had pressured Vickers constantly
after taking second place on lap 194. Vickers had taken the lead
in his Stewart Components Monte Carlo on lap 123 of the 250-lap
race at the half-mile oval.
“He bobbled just a little bit and that was enough to get
alongside him,” Agnew said. “I had a faster car, but he had
position and I just didn’t know if I could get by him. I tried
everything I could think of to get around him, and fortunately I
got a break to win it. It feels good!”
“Jeff had the faster car all night, but my crew got me out of
the pits so quick that I went from seventh to first, and that
was almost enough to win,” Vickers said. “Jeff raced me hard and
clean. Once he got that left front by my right front he had me.
He raced as hard and as clean as I could expect. We’ll go home
with a second and be happy.”
Ten of the 37 starters finished on the lead lap in this
highly-competitive race, Jason Sarvis of Myrtle Beach was third
in a Chevrolet, Mardy Lindley of Taylors, S.C., was fourth in a
Ford Taurus, Hal Goodson of Winston-Salem, N.C., was fifth in a
Chevrolet.
Bill Plemmons Jr. of Locust Grove, Ga., was sixth in a Ford, Jay
Fogelman of Durham, N.C., was seventh in a Ford, followed by
Mario Gosselin of Lake Wales, Fla., in a Ford, Dave Houpt of
Friedens, Pa., in a Chevrolet and fastest qualifier Steve
Christian of Buford, Ga., in a Ford.
The race will be broadcast on Speedvision on Thursday at 9 p.m.
