CHECKERS TO MARK SMITH AT JENNERSTOWN SPEEDWAY

By Mike Milliron

Jennerstown, PA – August 11, 2001 – Mark Smith used a different path, but still wound up at the same destination in the Wheeler Bros./AC Delco Late Model division feature race at Jennerstown Speedway, victory lane. Other winners during the True Value/Brown Timber & Land sponsored presentation of the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series program were Todd Price in the Jennerstown Pro Trucks, Todd Knight in the Brown Timber & Land Street Stocks, presented by Black’s Specialty Service. Joey Dennewitz took his first career win in the Cover Insurance Agency/PA Legacy Series, and Jason Fritz won in the Jennerstown Chargers. Chantal Germek won the Ladies Enduro race.  Twin State Auto Racing Club presented each divisional winner with a special plaque.

It was another great race for the Wheeler Bros./AC Delco Late Model division, but the cream still rose to the top, as Mark Smith showed everyone that he has what it takes to be a championship caliber driver. Starting behind front row starters Cary Todaro and Jeff Dunmyer, Smith had his work cut out for him, as he had to battle through two tough competitors to take over the lead. Once there, Smith had things mostly his way, as he outdistanced his closest challengers to the finish line for his sixth win of the season. Cary Todaro held off Shawn Beam as the pair finished second and third. Neil Brown captured fourth, just in front of Bobby Henry who closed out the top five. Neil Brown and Jayme Bolkovac won the heat races.

It was de-ja-vue all over again for Jennerstown Pro Truck winner Todd Price, as the Alum Bank driver returned to the winner’s circle for the fourth consecutive week. This week Price had to start in third behind George Englert and Josh Coughenour, but those two proved to be slow starters, as Price passed both of them within the first half lap of racing action. The closest challenge came from defending divisional champion Aaron Will, but an ill-handling race truck forced him into a turn four spin, which slowed the field but not Price’s momentum. At the finish line it was Josh Coughenour coming home in second, with Jason Houndshell picking up a career best third place finish. Dave Brunell took fourth place, while Aaron Will recovered from his early race spin to finish in fifth. Brandon Manns and Todd Price took the heat race wins.

The Brown Timber & Land Street Stock special race event presented by Black’s Specialty Service was a walk in the park for race winner Todd Knight, as the Monroeville, PA driver took control of the race early and never looked back en route to another win.  The real race was behind Knight, as Tracy Colarusso had to come through the field from his eighth place starting position to record a second place finish.  Roger Onstead ran a steady race to come home in third, while Mark Blohm had to start tenth and used his racing instincts to finish in the fourth position.  Carl Travarrow ran a strong second half of the race to finish in fifth.  Heat race wins went to Tracy Colarusso and Adam Kostelnik.

In the Cover Insurance Agency/PA Legacy Series race event, it was rookie Joey Dennewitz capturing his first career Legacy Series win.  Dennewitz used his second place starting position to jump out to an early lead over Marshall Biddington.  As the race progressed, Biddington made several attempts to challenge for the lead, none of which succeeded.  As the laps wound down Jayme Bolkovac began to make a move towards to the front but contact with Biddington forced her to the rear of the field and Biddington to the pits on the back of a tow truck.  That opened the door for Branden Taylor to challenge Dennewitz for the lead with two to go, but the laps ran out for Taylor, as Dennewitz crossed the line first.  Finishing third through fifth was Jayme Bolkovac, Bill Miller, and Brett Boyer, filling in for Ed Boyer.

The Jennerstown Charger division featured yet another Jason and Jason show.  As this week, Jason Fritz was able to hold off the challenges of Jason Holder to win the 15-lap feature event.   Fritz started from the outside front row and jumped out to the early race lead as the pack of hungry challengers attempted to chase him down.  Jason Holder and Greg Praysner waged a great two-car battle for second and eventually ran down race leader Fritz.  The three cars battled to the checkered flag, with Fritz taking the win with Holder and Praysner finishing second and third.  Pole sitter Justin Lasky held on to a fourth place finish, while Travis Smith rounded out the top five.

In the Ladie’s Enduro race it was Chantal Germek winning her second race in a row.  This time she took the win in front of Jeanette Stanko, Jamie McKenzie, Tiffany Bellavance and Tiffany Shaffer.

Next week J.L.G. Manufacturing will present the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series program, featuring twin 50-lap features for the Wheeler Bros./AC Delco Late Models, along with a special 25-lap Jennerstown Charger race, plus regular racing in the other divisions, along with a Men’s Enduro.  Late Models will be qualifying for a $1,000 fast time award and race fans will be eligible to enter for the chance to win $500 in the Spectator 500 program.
