Jennerstown, PA – April 28, 2001 – Jeff Dunmyer and
Barry Awtey shared the Wheeler Bros./AC Delco Late
Model division victory lane spotlight during Bazell
Oil Company race night at Jennerstown Speedway. This
unusual sounding event was the result of running the
remainder of a rain delayed feature race from
Opening Night action. Other feature race winners in
the night’s racing action were Adam Kostelnik in the
Brown Timber & Land Street Stocks, Jayme Bolkovac in
the Cover Insurance Agency PA Legacy Cars, Todd
Price in the Pro Trucks, and Jason Fritz in the
Jennerstown Chargers.
The evening started out with the Wheeler Bros./AC
Delco Late Models taking to the track in the same
running order they were stopped at on lap eighteen,
due to rain during opening night racing. In that
race, Jeff Dunmyer had moved from his sixth place
starting spot up into second place, closing in on
race leader Mark Cottone. When the race was resumed
Dunmyer wasted no time in establishing himself as
the race leader, and cruised through the remaining
laps to claim his first win of the young race
season. Neil Brown finished in second, while Barry
Awtey rose through the field to capture third.
Cottone finished in fourth, with Bobby Henry closing
out the top five.
In the regular forty-lap feature of the night it
was Barry Awtey claiming his first win of the
season, in a race that was marred by accidents and
mechanical failures. Mark Cottone started from the
pole position, and maintained the front position
throughout the first fourteen laps of the race.
Shawn Beam had his racecar on a virtual rail, as he
carved his way around the high side of the racetrack
to pass Jeff Dunmyer, Dan Campbell, and finally
Cottone. The top two racers were side-by-side on a
lap 29 race restart, when they made contact on the
front stretch, sending both of them hard into the
turn one outside retaining wall. Neither drivers
were seriously hurt, but both of their racecars were
severely damaged and unable to return. On the
ensuing restart, Barry Awtey took charge of the
race, and led Neil Brown and the rest of the field
to the checkered flag. Following behind Brown in
third was Jayme Bolkovac, with Mark Smith coming
home in fourth, using a Shawn Beam back-up racecar,
after his primary car’s engine experienced terminal
troubles. Late Model Rookie contender Wade Champano
made it through all of the mishaps to score a very
respectable fifth place finish, in only his second
outing in the premiere division. Heat race wins went
to Sean Beam and Bobby Henry.
In the Brown Timber & Land feature race it was a
gutsy performance by Adam Kostelnik, as he used
patience to his advantage in winning his first race
of the Jennerstown 2001 season. After starting
third, Kostelnik had to first fight off a serious
challenge from Roger Onstead and Chris Deyarmin,
before mounting his own charge to pass Billy
Mostoller for second. All of this maneuvering was
among the top six racers, while they were running
within mere inches of each other. Once in front of
Mostoller, Kostelnik was poised at the rear bumper
of race leader Dink Colarusso, when a flat tire
forced the leader to spin, while a multi-car crash
was happening just behind the lead pair of cars.
This put Kostelnik in the top spot, and allowed a
hard charging Todd Knight to move into second. On
the ensuing restart, the two stayed glued to each
other for the remaining laps, with Kostelnik pulling
out the narrow win. Finishing behind Knight in third
was Billy Mostoller, with Bill Stevens and John
Stanko filling out the top five positions. Heat
races went to Dink Colarusso and Billy Mostoller.
The Cover Insurance Agency/PA Legacy Car feature
race was a tight affair, as Will Thomas and Jayme
Bolkovac raced side-by-side for the first ten
circuits, until Thomas spun from the front position.
Bolkovac took over the race lead, and after fending
off the early challenge from Ricky Anderson, cruised
to her second win in as many races. Thomas rebounded
from his spin and barnstormed his way back through
the field to finish a distance second. Anderson came
home in third, while Marshall Biddington claimed
fourth, and Joey Dennewitz finished in fifth. Heat
race wins went to Will Thomas and Jayme Bolkovac.
In the Pro Truck feature race it was Todd Price
leading wire-to-wire, to claim his first win of the
season. Bryan Thomas shadowed Price throughout the
entire race distance, by faded by the race’s end.
Dave Brunell seemed to be the man on the move, as he
made his way from a sixth starting position, and
steadily worked his way through the front runners,
to finally finish in third. Josh Coughouner also
improved his starting spot by four, with some close
racing action with George Englert, to finish in
fourth. Brandon Manns ran a consistent race to
finish in fifth. Heats went to George Englert and
Dave Brunell.
The Jennerstown Charger feature race also a
wire-to-wire win for Jason Fritz, but he had to fend
off the close challenge from a strong running Jason
Holder, who dogged the race leader from start to
finish. Greg Praysner came home with a fine third
place finish, with Gary Churchfield and Travis Smith
completing the top five. Heat race wins went to Greg
Praysner and Jason Holder.
