MITCHELL TO TAKE ON TALLADEGA |
|
|
WAYNESBURG, PA (Oct. 12)........ West Virginia driver Richard Mitchell
will
face three formidable challenges when the Automobile Racing Club of
America
(ARCA) RE/MAX series invades the Talladega (Alabama) Superspeedway on
Sat.
Oct. 20.
First, the Food City 300 mile Talladega contest is the longest race on
the
ARCA schedule. The event will also mark the longest race in which
Mitchell
has ever driven. Throw in the fact that at 2.66 miles in length,
Talladega
is the longest closed-course oval in the nation. And with overall speeds
averaging over 190 mph, it's easy to see why the West Virginia
University
grad expects to have his hands full.
"Talladega can be an intimidating place," Mitchell said, "it's big and
fast.....things can happen in a hurry. With the restrictor plate-rule on
the
engines we can pretty much drive around the track flat-out, without
lifting
the throttle. But the 'drafting' situation will create large groups of
cars
running in tight packs all day long. It can be a little nerve wracking
when
you are racing with cars only inches off your front and rear bumpers and
on
both sides of you."
Mitchell will be looking for his fourth top-10 ARCA finish this season
in the
Talladega event. In his most recent race at Lowe's Motor Speedway, the
two-time defending NASCAR Northeast regional champion finished tenth.
"We're looking for a good run at Talladega in our Coach USA/Mountaineer
Gaming/Forest River Motorhomes Pontiac Grand Prix," said Mitchell, "we
will
be using a former Ward Burton/Bill Davis Racing NASCAR Winston Cup
speedway
car, powered by a new SB-2 General Motors plate-engine recently
purchased
from Chip Ganassi Racing."
The Oct. 20th ARCA Food City 300 will be televised live from 1:00-4:00
PM
(EDT) on the TNT cable network.
Mitchell will conclude his 2001 ARCA RE/MAX campaign at the 1.5 mile
Atlanta
Motor Speedway on Nov. 17. |
