JENNERSTOWN, PA - Mike
Herman Jr. returns to Jennerstown Speedway July 14th for the
United Speed Alliance racing (USAR) Hooters ProCup Northern
Division race with a new strategic plan to garner his first
career victory.
"We'll stay with the
leaders," he says, "and then hopefully have enough car at
the end to beat them." |
It wasn't really a mistake that
cost Herman victory in the first-ever
Hooters ProCup North race April 21st at Jennerstown. He simply
opted to
stay on the track when the leaders pitted, so he could collect
the $1,000
Lucas Oil Products ½ Way Leader bonus. Then he pitted out of
sequence, and
trapped in the back of the pack, got collected in an accident.
Despite
front-end damage to Ford Taurus. Herman finished third.
"Looking back, I probably would have done it differently, but
being
unsponsored (at the time), we needed that bonus money," he
says. "With our
new sponsor - the Serta Mattress Company - things are looking
better and
better. We've let a couple of wins slip by us, and we think
we've got a
great shot at winning at Jennerstown."
Herman, of Kannapolis, NC, drives for the well-known Don Strouse
Motorsports Team, and the Spartanburg, South Carolina-based team
has set
their sights on the Northern Division championship. He also
plans on
returning for the Four Champions Series race at Jennerstown on
Sept. 29th
that will bring together the best of the North and South
divisions for a
five-event series of event that will determine the overall USAR
champion.
"If you try to win races, the points will take care of
themselves," says
Herman, who lives in the heart of stock car country in
Kannapolis, NC.
"Right now we're trying to use the momentum of the early races
to launch
our championship run. The more we run, the better we run."
This is the first season of split divisions for the Hooters
ProCup series.
Herman is unofficially third behind veteran Mardy Lindley and
youngster
Brian Vickers in the Northern division points.
