JENNERSTOWN, PA (December 14, 2001) – History will be made at
Jennerstown Speedway in 2002, as the inaugural Flight 93 Memorial Race
will be held Saturday, September 14, 2002. The Flight 93 Memorial Race
will be a special 93-lap Late Model race. September 11, 2001 marked a
day in infamy for many people, with one of the crash sites just miles
from the speedway.
The weekend of racing will include regular racing in the Pro Truck,
Street Stock, Charger and Pennsylvania Legacy Series divisions. The
Flight 93 Memorial Race will be highlighted by the return of the Great
American Flag. The Great American Flag made an appearance at Jennerstown
Speedway last year, shortly after the attacks on America. The Great
American Flag is the world’s largest American flag, measuring 400 feet
in length and 212 feet in width, and weighing seven tons. Each star
measures 13 feet wide and each stripe measures 16 feet tall. The public
is invited to come view the flag September 14, 2002.
Steve Peles, President of Jennerstown Speedway said, “We wanted to do
something to remember the innocent lives lost September 11. These events
hit very close to home for everyone, especially here in Somerset County.
We want to remember the lives lost on Flight 93 near Shanksville. The
return of the Great American Flag to the speedway is going to really put
everyone in a patriotic mood. I want to thank the owner of the Great
American Flag, Ted Dorfman of Greensburg for bringing the flag back to
Jennerstown. I also want to thank Maxim Crane Works of Pittsburgh for
their service in helping to put this great event together.”
