MITCHELL TO
COMPETE IN JENNERSTOWN/MOTORDROME FINALES |
BRUCETON MILLS, WV (Aug. 31)...... Two-time defending NASCAR
Northeast
regional champion Richard Mitchell will bring down the curtain
on his 2001
Western Pennsylvania short-track campaign by competing in the
Franks Auto
Supermarkets 75 lap feature at Motordrome Speedway on Sept. 7
and the 200 lap
Fall Festival Classic at Jennerstown on Sept. 15.
Mitchell, the 1999-2000 Motordrome late model track champion,
has been
invincible in the four races he has contested at the half-mile
Smithton
asphalt oval this season driving the Frank B. Fuhrer Motorsports
Coors Light
Monte Carlo.
The Bruceton Mills driver has captured a pair of extra-distance
races (Shop
'n Save 100 and Tom Clark Chevrolet 150), and was the man to
beat in the two
other races until lady luck dealt him a cruel blow.
"We were about to take the lead in the May 75 lapper when we got
caught-up in
an accident with the two cars in front of me," Mitchell said,
"then in the
NAPA 200 last month we battled from the 12th starting spot to
second place,
and was just starting to work on the leader when a leaking rear
end seal
forced us to the pits."
So dominant has been Mitchell in the first four events, that in
449 laps of
racing, not a single competitor has passed him for position.
Things have not been quite that good at Jennerstown, but the
West Virginia
University graduate is working on the situation.
""We've been to Jennerstown twice," said Mitchell, "we were
terrible our
first time out, and we struggled a bit in the first twin-50
there a couple of
weeks ago. But, we did come back to win the second 50 lapper. I
think we
should be real strong for the 200."
If past history is any indication, Mitchell should be the
heads-on favorite,
as he swept to victory in every extra-distance event held at the
Laurel
Highlands oval last season.
Following the conclusion of the short-track season Mitchell will
travel to
the 2.5 mile Talladega Superspeedway on Sept. 25-26 for an ARCA
RE/MAX test
session, and then will compete in the Easy Care 100 ARCA race at
Lowe's Motor
Speedway on Oct. 4.
