Rising star
set to invade USAR ProCup Series Northern Division |
by Jason Wise
MOORESVILLE, N.C., (April 16, 2001) - When the USAR ProCup
Series kicks off its Northern Division campaign this weekend at
Jennerstown Speedway (Jennerstown, Pa.), Regan Smith will have
his sights set on victory lane.
The 17-year-old rising star will pilot the No. 28 Chevrolet
Monte Carlo in northern events for the USAR ProCup Series
throughout the 2001 season. "The Northern Division provides
drivers like myself and those from up north the opportunity to
go to new tracks and venues and showcase our talents," Smith
said. "It gives us an opportunity to target a whole new market
and obtain sponsorships in new areas of the country as well."
Smith competed as a rookie last season in the USAR ProCup
Series, scoring several top- five and top-ten finishes en route
to finishing 14th in the series standings.
After a recent test session at Jennerstown Speedway, Smith is
confident that he is bringing the whole package back for the
race. "We're extremely confident heading into the race," he
said. "The test session was the best I' ve ever had since I've
been in racing. If we give it our all, there's no reason why the
car can't run up front and contend for the win."
Smith has set realistic goals and expectations for himself and
team during the upcoming season. "Our goals are to win at least
two races and sit on the pole a few times," Smith said. "I would
like to finish in the top five in Northern Division points and
finish top-five in season-ending points as well. I don't see any
reason why we can't accomplish those goals."
Smith also knows that he is bringing a loaded weapon to the
track in the form of his pit crew. "The whole team has been
practicing pit stops twice a week and they have been amazing,"
Smith said. "The guys have been pulling off 16-second pit stops
consistently during practice."
While Smith is gearing up for this weekend's race, he still has
his sights set on the future. "Our plans for 2001 and beyond are
that we would like to develop marketing partners to be able to
continue to move up and progress with our racing operation," he
said. "We would like to be racing in the NASCAR Busch Series by
2002."
USAR ProCup Series qualifying at Jennerstown Speedway is set for
5:00 p.m. EST on Saturday, April 21. The race gets the green
flag two hours later at 7:00 p.m. EST.
