JENNERSTOWN, Pa. (June 16, 2000) - Tracy Gordon won his third
consecutive Busch North Series, NASCAR Touring race Saturday night,
taking the lead from Dale Shaw on a restart
just past the halfway mark and leading the rest of the distance in the
Burnham Boilers/CarQuest Auto Parts 150.
Shaw, defending champion Brad Leighton, Jerry Marquis, and Jamie Aube
completed the top five, with Mike Olsen, Mike Johnson, Dennis Doyle,
Bryan Wall, and Dave Dion making up
the balance of the top ten. All were on the lead lap at the finish.
Gordon averaged 64.020 miles per hour for the distance, after winning
the Bud Pole Award at 94.680 miles per hour and redrawing the seventh
starting position. He also collected the
Gatorade Front Runner Award for leading the most laps. The lead changed
four times among Shaw, Leighton, and Gordon as five caution periods
slowed the action for 36 laps.
Leighton, starting outside the front row, outdragged Shaw for the lead
at the green flag, but Shaw came back to take the point on lap 36. The
race went caution-free until the halfway mark,
which sent all the leaders to the pits for right-side tires. Shaw
emerged still with the lead, but cars on the tail of the lead lap
restarting in front of the leaders gave Gordon the passing
opportunity he needed, and after taking the lead on lap 83, he was never
headed.
Aube was the major beneficiary of the pit stop sequence, moving into
third and holding on for his first top-five finish of the season.
Johnson won his third straight Raybestos
Rookie-of-the-Race award, while Tom Bolles' nine-position improvement
from start to finish earned him the Flowmaster Star of the Race honors.
Unofficially, Gordon now leads Leighton by 52 points in the Busch North
Series, NASCAR Touring point standings. Olsen trails by 77 points, Shaw
by 99, and Dion by 105.
The Busch North Series joins the Busch Series, Grand National Division
for the Lysol 200 at Watkins Glen International next Sunday, June 25.
The next stand-alone Busch North Series
event is the CarQuest Auto Parts 150 at Stafford Motor Speedway in
Stafford Springs, Conn., on Friday, June 30.
